Superb performances of Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle

Sterndale Bennett Recording

Sterndale Singers’ YouTube recording of William Sterndale Bennett's 'God is a Spirit,' was included in a talk about The Chorale Book for England hosted by the Welsh Church of Central London in October 2021. This 2-volume publication, compiled by Catherine Winkworth and co-edited by Sir William Sterndale Bennett, was published in 1885 and 1888.

We were delighted to join forces with choral group Bel Canto and some top class soloists and musicians, to perform Rossini's gloriously operatic and definitely unsolemn Petite Messe Solennelle on 5 March 2022 in St. Maries Cathedral Church Sheffield and 6 March 2022 in St. Margaret's Church Swinton.

Sally Perkins (Alto), David Watkin-Holmes (Tenor) and Charles Cunliffe (Bass) at St. Margaret's Church.

Sterndale Singers and Bel Canto choirs at St. Marie's Cathedral Church with (l. to r.) Ruth Milsom (Harmonium), Rachel Nicholls (Soprano), Sally Perkins (Alto), Robert Webb (Musical Director), David Watkin-Holmes (Tenor), Charles Cunliffe (Bass) and Philip Collin (Pianist).

Covid issues provided some very last minute changes to the lineup of soloists and musicians. We were therefore hugely grateful to international soprano Rachel Nicholls, alto Sally Perkins and pianist Philip Collin who stepped into their roles with very little notice. Superlative performances all round from soloists, musicians and the choirs were evident to all attending the concerts over that weekend.

Raising money for South Yorkshire Refugee Law & Justice

We were pleased to help local Sheffield charity South Yorkshire Refugee Law and Justice raise over £330 at our light-hearted summer concert of Music from Stage & Screen in July 2022.

The audience were entertained by great songs from well known films and shows including:  a medley of James Bond themes; music by Cole Porter and Gershwin; the theme song from Titanic; Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany’s; Over the Rainbow from the Wizard of Oz and many others.

Good fun was had at our alternative version of the Eurovision Song Contest on 21 May 2022. Performing a selection of songs from 18 of the countries that take part in Eurovision, the audience was able to vote at the end of the concert for their top two favourite songs. Competition was tough but Scotland's traditional "Eriskay Love Lilt" was narrowly beaten into second place by Ukraine's "Prayer for Ukraine" by Mykola Lysenko. A fitting end to a great evening.
